NHK’s BS1 satellite channel relays news aired by overseas broadcasters on the following programs: World News, World News Asia, World News America and Catch! Sekai no Topnews (Catch the Global Topnews). Here, too, the Bilingual Center’s interpreters and translators play an important role in bringing viewers vivid accounts of global events.

Overseas broadcasters: ABC, HLN(CNN), PBS and Bloomberg (US), BBC (UK), ZDF and ARD (Germany), F2 (France), TVE (Spain), RUSSIA (Russia), TRT (Turkey), Al Jazeera (Qatar), NDTV (India), CCTV, Shanghai RTS and Hong Kong TVB (China), KBS (South Korea), ABS-CBN (Philippines), METRO (Indonesia), VTV (Vietnam), ABC (Australia), and Rede Bandeirantes (Brazil).

  • Our interpreters work in rotation to cover regular daily news programs shown on the BS1 channel to bring Japanese-language versions of the news from around the world. The programs are originally broadcast in English, German, French, Spanish, Russian, Arabic, Chinese, Korean, Vietnamese, among other languages.

  • Whenever a major natural disaster, accident or conflict occurs abroad, interpreters and translators capable of working in the relevant language are assembled immediately so they can relay the news as it unfolds.

  • Interpreters working with overseas news programs must also have extensive knowledge of global current affairs and be ready at all times to deal with the latest developments.
